Q: Best way to add HP to a 1990 Mazda Miata ?
I'm gonna install headers, free flow intake, and a after market exhaust on the car but after that what else should i upgrade or put in it, if the answer is NOS then what do i need to do to prepare my engine for it and how often will i need to rebuild my motor
A: Wow, some weird answers so far.
I'd suggest taking the money you had intended for the I/H/E (Intake, headers, exhaust) and buying an inexpensive turbo kit, or a used supercharger kit for about 1k. Of these kits the greddy turbo and the JR M45 are the most common of the entry level forced induction kits.
First let me warn you that modifying cars can get expensive, and you will never be satisfied.
Second, before you purchase anything, get a compression test done on your engine. It doesn't matter if it has 60k or 600k miles on it. Have the compression checked and verify if it will be a good idea to turbo/supercharge your engine.
Third, visit your local miata club and take a few rides in forced induction cars. I am sure you will be happy with the ride.
Lastly, decide what your "Flavor" is. I autocross, so I took the Supercharger route.
You can get into forced induction for around 750-900 for a used entry level kit. Afterwards, things just get more and more expensive.
As far as rebuilding, if your motor is in good shape, you wont need to for quite a while. If your motor isn't up to snuff, you can get miata engines used for a good deal at lots of places.
Q: Does a 1990 Mazda Miata have airbags?
A: The early Miatas only had a driver's side airbag. It was not until 1994 that the Miata started having driving and passenger air bags as a standard feature on both the base and M edition.
Q: 1990 mazda mx5/miata help?
I need to know what kind of oil is best for a 1990 mazda mx5/miata, plus any other usefull information about this model would be very appreciated.
Ok lets see the Miata is a 1990 convertable, it has over 175,000 miles its has been kept in great condition and has just recently had all of the hoses replaced, the climate I live in is a southern (warm) climate with a high elevation. The car will be used mainly to drive about 15-40 miles to go to school and work everday for as long as I have it.
A: It depends on how much oil you loose between changes.
I run synthetic (10-40) in mine because I want to get a full driving season out of the oil. The 10-40 reduced lifter noise. I was running 10-30.
I have 130K on mine and just replaced the front seal due to an oil leak at the front end.
Q: would a 1990 mazda miata be good........?
for a 16yr old? to much speed or too small? wats ur opinion?
A: Miata is one of most reliable roadster. They are cheap, abit small if you're more than 6" tall, they're light, handles great, rear wheel drive, really fun, easy to fix, and they're so many out there you can find, and wide selection for parts.
the cars not that fast, but the main point of miata is fun, makes you want to keep driving.
Q: whats tire pressure P.S.I. for 1990 mazda miata?
A: Tire pressure has more to do with the tires than the model of the vehicle. I doubt you have the original tires on a 16 year old car... For instance, the tires that originally came on my truck needed to be inflated to less than 50 PSI. The new tires I bought for my truck had to be inflated to 50 PSI.
Look on the outside wall of the tire. It should give you a range of pressure (i.e. inflate to 30-35 PSI) or something like that.
Q: Who else here owns an early 1990's mazda miata?
A: got a buddy who does why? want to race????
Q: I Want a 1990 or 1992 Mazda Miata?
I live in Ohio and i want a mazda miata and i cant find anyone who is selling one. If anyone knows of anyone or you even have one for sale please let me know. I want one really bad. Thank you. You can also email me bout this too. I am willing to drive a reasonable distance to get it as well. Thanks. My email Is VDiscoLemonadeV@yahoo.com
A: Just to add to the previous posters knowledgeable response....I would rule out the 90-91 model and search for the 92-93 model due to a somewhat defective short nose crank issue.
Craigslist, Miata.net, auto trader, carsforsale.com can all be beneficial.
Q: im 6''4 / 155lbs, and was wanting to know if i could fit in a 1990's model mazda miata?
A: I'm 6', 250 and I drove a Miata for about 8 wonderful, wonderful, Summers. When I first sat in it, I thought I'd need my arm amputated in order to feel comfortable... but I got used to it.
The additional 4" of height you have over me might tip the balance for you... in my case, I have 100 pounds on you... and while it didn't really help for me to be that size... I never found myself saying, "Gee, I wish I was 100 pounds lighter so I could fit better in my car!" LOL!
I drove a 1991 model. Pre 1993 models are the "classic" Miata's in my mind. Look in a used car magazine like the Auto Trader, or Auto Seller... whatever they call it in your area. Lots of them should be coming up for sale soon with Spring approaching!
Hope this helps!
Q: Maintenence -wise, who knows a lot about Mazda Miata's, preferably older models?
I have a 1990 Miata, manual. A fricken' trooper. She's got just over 260,000 miles on her with no major work done. It has a problem in the cold mornings of always grinding between the high gears for the first 5-10 min, afterwards which it stops. She also has another problem: Sputtering and putting. Mainly in 1st and 2nd gear. She's not as fast as she used to be overall, and besides the understandable "She's old, let her go." answer(which I plan on doing soon anyway), what other suggestions are there? I did just recently put some oil in. I want to try and give her some of her life back, before she goes under...
PS. Yeah yeah, I know Miata's are referred to as 'girly' cars, but I needed a car, and I got it for free. Plus, that's the main reason I'm getting rid of it. I want to get an Impreza or Lancer personally...
A: try changing the transmission and put the right fluid back in and see if the grinding goes away. if not, you transmission synchronizers are worn. to solve you sputter problem, do an engine compression test and see if the compression are low.if low compression, engine is gone
Q: How long do Mazda engines last?
I am about to buy a Mazda Miata 1990 with 109,000 miles on it for about $3500 USD.
I am wondering what the average life of these motors are assuming they have been maintained very well. Any insight is appreciated. Thank you.
A: I don't know the details - but according to Edmunds.com, that car would be worth about $2100 from a dealer and $1400 from a private party where I live - assuming "clean" condition. Both USD, of course.
If that's in good shape and been well maintained, you should get quite a bit of life out of it, but don't pay that much for it unless it's in exceptional shape.
And ALWAYS have a good mechanic give it the once over before you buy.
Q: Can a mazda miata use a quite muffler instead of a loud?
just curious...
i have a 1990 (NA) mazda miata mx5 with 1.6L engine 5 speed manual trans. with all dealer oem part on the car.
I was wondering if it is possible to change my car muffler to a quiter one.. if there is one of those parts out there or at the dealer.
for example.. like real economy cars like honda civic, toyota yaris, corolla or other true economy cars NORMALLY get 30+. per gallon.
I know these would quite down the sound of my car when i driving and hopefully increase gas mileage like the other economical civics, corollas, yaris's out there.
If anyone knows of anythings like this.. can you share with me your knowledge.
Thanks in advanced!! :)
A: The most efficient exhaust system for a Miata (or so I have been told) is a 2 1/4 diameter one.
Anything that improves performance has the ability to also increase fuel economy. If the car is driven conservatively. I have put a different header on mine, and a high flow catalytic so far. When we drive in a conservative manner the fuel economy has improved by 2 mpg (we now get 31 on the high way instead of 29).
I have read of those who claim 35 mpg out of a Miata, but I think they do not have an A/C or power steering.
Another thing that seemed to help MPG were better plugs.

PS: Fergus: Didn't have a car. Needed one. Got a Miata for free. End of story.
And that's the main reason I'm getting rid of it.
A: Dude. Miatas are girly cars. Let her go and get something manly like a Hummer.
Q: are late 1990's mazda miatas relaible, fast?
im buying my first car and im interested in a used 90's miata. i want a realiable convertible that's easy to work on and somewhat fast. the mazda miata seems to be my best choice. what do you think?
A: The 90-94 Miatas are awesome. They are extremely reliable cars. With a good maitenance plan, I have seen early 90s Miatas with well over 250,000 miles still out on the road ways. The other great bonus with the 90-94 Miatas is they get really great gas mileage. The 90-94 Miatas are easy to work on and maintain. They are quick, but that is because they are light weight. They respond extremely well.
Q: Tell me all about the Mazda Miata?
I'm in the market for a 1990-1996 or so Miata. Can you tell me about them from experience? How fast are they? Gas mileage? Reliability? What should be my mileage limit? Thanks!
A: We use two Miatas as our only cars. We love it but we are crazy like that.
The miata is a driver's car, first generations such as the one you are looking into are way over-engineered and are pretty much bullet-proof all the way past 200k miles as long as you stick to the scheduled maintenance. They are generally thrifty and easy to fix in case anything brakes down as well. Did I say they are a riot to drive as well ? :)
Obviously, they are small and oh so light, so you need to be comfortable with little and simple.
It is a quick car, but not a fast car. Their sportiness is not due to their engine, which does not have a lot of chest hairs, but to their handling, their nimbleness, and the way that they communicate the road to you. You drive them as you wear a glove. Once you get going at speed on a twisty mountain road you may not touch the brake pedal for a long while, because their grip is phenomenal and they feel so safe and predictable.
If you want big horsepower, it can be had with many options, from superchargers to turbos to engine conversions (there are kits to put corvette engines in there if that is your thing, but remember that 400 hp in a 900 kg car does not make for a great daily driver).
All you ever wanted to know about miatas, and more, is at miata.net (read the faqs, the garage, the references, and the forums!)
Q: Hey I have a question about a Miata part.?
I can buy a 1990-2003 Mazda Miata MX5 Instrument Cluster Trim Bezel Panel for around 150$ I can buy a 1999 Model cover for around 30$ 1/5 the price so I am wondering if the 1999 Model cover will fit at all it looks similar but I wouldnt know.
A: No, it is not a universal fit for 1989-2003. 89-97 is the year group you should normally be looking for. However it says for the Instrument cluster faceplate the year you need to be for by groups are 90-95. Go to the following web link and check out their prices for the Instrument cluster faceplate.

Also MMM Miata has their cluster faceplate for 96.95.
