Q: 1991 Mazda Miata Belts?
I was told the belts need to be changed on my 1991 Miata. Does anyone know how many belts there are and if it's easy enough for my husband to do them himself?

A: it uses 2 belts, 1 for the alternator and water pump, the other for the power steering and ac i dont know about your husband but i can make the job in no more than 15 mins

Q: 1991 mazda miata rpm tachometer?
rpm tachometer stopped working just changed out master cylinder and alternator would this have to be part of the problem

A: The tach gets its signal from the ignitor (yellow/blue wire). This connection is also at the "diagnostic" connector. So check the plug in at the ignitor. The only thing this out put is used for is the tach and diagnostic plug in. There may be a failure in the ignitor resulting in the tach failure. I am not sure. But it could be a tach failure. Try flyingmiata.com, they may have a salvage unit that will work.

Q: Is Mazda Miata a good choice for me ????? FIRST CAR !!!! HELP ME PLZ !!!!
ok i go to university and im 19... not having a car is a real pain... so im going to buy my first car... i really like it Miata ! it seems like they are really good on gas and not really expensive ! what do you think of Miata 1991-3 ? is it reliabe for a student ? cheap parts ? give me some info and if you know any other cars similar to Miata ( sporty ) plz let me know ! thanks a lot ... I live in Canada which means we dont have Peugeot here ! :-( and yea 206 is a nice one !

A: ok, for college a 2 seater will be just fine. In fact it will be better than fine cause you won't have to be the designated driver all the time. I started with a 4 door in college and ended with a truck...drove way less with the truck, unless it was a date, which is also the bonus for a Miata as ladies do like Miatas. Next, yes they are great on gas. Parts are not expensive as there are plenty of great used and new Miata parts online, such as Planet Miata...MM Miata...and Raven Wing. The 91-93 Miata, especially the non-all-power models, is easy to fix, you just need a repair manual. They have plenty of room under the hood to do repairs as well. They are a joy and dream to drive. As far as the area you live in, you will need snow tires and chains for the winter. Also, you need to get a 91-93 Miata with a hardtop for teh winters so the car is warmer and better sealed against the elements. You will need to keep the car clean during the winter so the salt used doesn't eat the body. Lastly, go for it and find yourself a Miata off either Autotrader.com, Craigslist, or Cars.com, just get yourself a CarFax membership so you can check the vins and avoid a salvage title or misrepresented ad.

Q: 1991 miata seat wires.?
I just bought a 1991 miata and this is my first mazda car and a convertable. When i was cleaning it, i saw some wires attached to the seats. Are those headrest speakers? If so, there not working now, how do you replace them and how much does it cost?

A: Hi, Your 91 Miata has the ability to use a headrest speaker. If you look at the top of the Headrest, you will see a zipper. Un zip this and look inside you will see mounting holes for the speakers. What it appears that you have is the wiring harness for the speakers which should be available in the Headrest to plug in speakers. The Mazda OEM speakers were / are not great, but there are lots of after market products that are available to fit the mounting of the Headrest and are plug and play to the harness. Lots of Info is vailable at Miata Net in the Garage section http://www.miata.net/garage/sound.html Good Luck !

Q: Can you dye a cloth car seats?
I have a very pristine 1991 Mazda Miata (convvert). My black cloth car seats have faded over the years. Can anyone think of a way to dye them so that the color is placed on uniformly? I was thinking about sponging on the color - what do you think?

A: They make a spray on dye for cars. Used car dealers use it all the time so you could try buying some from them, or even a detail shop. I would try that before sponging on the color. I don't know what kind of dye you plan to use, but most require that you rinse afterwards.

Q: where is the trunk opener in Mazda miata 91?
this car is 1991 special eddition and does not have inside switch to open up the trunk from inside of the car this car is 1991 special eddition and does not have inside switch to open up the trunk from inside of the car. I looked everwhere . the center consol only have one lever and that is for ful cap opener .

A: Either behind the seat (driver;s) or in the center console next to the fuel door lever.

Q: Should I anticipate any problems after re-installing a thermostat that was put in backwards?
My 1991 Mazda Miata was over-heating but not red-lining for quite awhile. Come to find out the thermostat was installed backwards. will installing it properly correct the problem? ( I'm in another state so haven't been able to test it out.)

A: Putting it the right way around should solve the cause. For the price of them, I might just get a new one, even if it is unlikely to be damaged by the overheat situation. Check the oil filler cap. Sometimes if you've got a small hole in the head gasket or intake gasket (from overheating) you'll see a foamy buildup clinging to it. Keep and eye on your coolant level for the gasket leak for a month or so.

Q: I'm thinking of buying a Mazda Miata. I'm a high mileage driver?
and was wondering how many miles were on your Miata before it started breaking down and needing repairs. ( Just so you know, I have a Toyota MR2, 1991, and just put a new trans in at 383 thousand miles. I plan to take as good care of my next car and hopefully, keep it that long too.)

A: The older miatas were extremely reliable. I have not worked on any of the newer ones so am unable to say how good they are, however, "Consumer Reports" have given even the newest models very high marks. They are great fun to drive. A 200,000 mile life with no problems would be what I would expect from a Miata.

Q: 1991 Mazda Miata Belts?
I was told the belts need to be changed on my 1991 Miata. Does anyone know how many belts there are and if it's easy enough for my husband to do them himself?

A: My 1990 has two belts; one for the P/S and AC, and another for the alternater. It's not difficult, but a little mechnaical experience would be good. Like knowing how snug the belts should be, and that they may need to be readjusted after a day or two.

Q: How do I remove and clean my fuel injectors?
I drive a 1991 Mazda Miata with a 1.6l DOHC engine.

A: new injectors will run your car about $280 for a good set but.. if you want to.. you can clean them thoroughly.. or just the nozzles. check this out: an injector is a little bit like an open cyllinder with one end containing a wire screen, then in the middle is a solenoid, then on the end is a nozzle. fuel passes through the injector in that order. over time carbon builds up on the nozzles, the solenoid, and around the wire screen, and most of build up is swept away by the detergents which are naturally in gasoline. a lot of it can again be swept away by adding a higher detergent mixture to your gas tank, also known as injector/intake cleaner. but that only removes most carbon buildups. what about the other stuff, like loose metallic bits and salts? the best cleaning you can do to your injectors is to take them out and run injector cleaner backwards through them, emptying all the crap which gets stuck in there. you can do this by purging the fuel system (run the car and pull the fuel pump relay, wait till it dies, then get underneath and further depressurize the lines from the fuel filter, but thats what i do), unhook the wiring, then remove the entire fuel rail, remove the injectors, and clean. the injectors will be closed, so youll need open them with a homemade circuit, and clean. thats the hard but tried way of doing it.. or you can pay the $280 :)

Q: Is my airbag too old?
I own a 1991 Mazda Miata with original airbag. Never been inspected or replaced. Should I remove it? Apparently though if I remove it my insurance rate might go up... And no its not illegal to remove it yourself. It's only illegal for a dealership or professional to remove it for you. And its very easy to remove, so I could easily change it if I needed to. I find that the answers i've received so far are unqualified. And hope to receive an experts opinion. Basically you're telling me that they NEVER expire and never need to be inspected?

A: Don't touch it. It's fine. The 'air-bag' light isn't on right? If it's not on then it's fine. All the sensors/connectors etc. of an air bag system are gold plated to last forever and be reliable. Trust me.

Q: Does my transmission or clutch need replacing?
Okay. Well today as I was going to work, with my crap tires and rain, my little baby 1991 mazda miata's tail whipped out. Being a RWD, I was used to this sort of thing, but this time, it really whipped out. Because of it, I had to brake hard and put my car into dirt and bushes. Lucky for me, no body or engine bay damage happened. I'm wondering about the underside, where the bushes and brush may have hit.. Now everytime I drive it, in any gear, my car suddenly disengages from the gear and revs high. After about half a second, it goes back into normal speeds. I noticed, when I give it some power, it does that all the time. [Now it seems like a clutch problem..] I already know I need a front end alignment to fix that crap handling I got when I hit the dirt and of course some new tires.. But what about the clutch/tranny? Which one needs to be replaced?

A: Yeah, seriously... You need a new car, sounds way to dangerous to be driving around in.

Q: Car help??
My parents just bought me a Mazda miata for my first car and it's a 1991 convertible. Are these cars prone to problems? and what would the insurance rates be?? I'm 14

A: I've got a 1992 Miata, and it is a fantastic car...they are known for being fairly trouble-free...make sure you get tune ups done frequently, and change the oil every 3,000 miles. Older cars require a bit more TLC than most, so don't go too hard on the car. Insurance is going to be dastardly expensive, since you are only 14 and the Miata is considered a sports car. Maybe you can get insured under your parent's insurance, and it will be a bit cheaper, than getting your own policy. One thing to keep in mind is that the Miata is essentially a roller-skate with a motor...it's not very crash worthy. If you wreck it, you stand a very good change of being seriously injured (much more than if you were driving a sedan!). Drive carefully, and fasten your seatbelt :) If you've got a soft-top, make sure to keep it clean and treated with some kind of vinyl preservative, otherwise it will become brittle. The plastic rear window in the soft-tops is prone to becoming discolored, but you can purchase a special cleaner that will keep it looking sharp longer. Frequent washing and waxing of your car will keep the paint looking good much longer...and if you don't have a garage or carport to park it in, look into purchasing a car cover for it. Also, if you have a zippered rear window in the back, don't forget to unzip it before you put the top down, otherwise you might tear the top. Good luck, and be safe :)
