Q: 1989 MAZDA RX7 GXL Questions?
i am looking into purchasing a 1989 MAZDA RX7 GXL but it has 165,000 original miles on it. It is going for $2495, is in rather amazing condition. But here is where I worry. What are known problems of the 1989 MAZDA RX7 GXL? What are problems that could come out of the blue for an RX-7 of that year and model with that many miles on it? The owner took good care of the vehicle and never beat it up while driving it, but still at 165000 miles on the engine what should i expect? Should I expect it to continue running for years yet (I do not do a LOT of traveling, currently the only guarantee on driving is 4 miles to and from college 5 days a week. Other travels are spontaneous with my friends, lol. But furthest I would go is Miami (from Orlando) and that would only be on weekends of course). Old Man Dirt: thanks for the response! im good at taking care of cars and i always wanted an older rx7. as far as friends, they can take another car (lol!). im just curious as to whether or not this thing might crap out on me even though it was taken real good care of. 165000 is a lot of mileage :P IloveViolance: learn to spell and use proper grammar.

A: A 1989 RX7 would not be my choice for a casual driver. There are several reasons for this. The first one is that it is almost a classic. This means the parts are getting scarce. There never were many parts at local parts shops to begin with and dealer support on older cars like this is almost non existent. The engine is unique to Mazda and in specific the RX series. Another reason is that the RX series car requires careful attention. By nature it looses oil and therefore needs the oil level checked daily (or at least every fill up). It is unforgiving on how it is started too. A lot of rotary engines fail due to inattention of the driver on start up. The last reason that comes to mind is seating, I notice you said friends, well seating in a RX7 is for practical purposes limited to two, even in the +2 set up. Now don't take me wrong, I love the RX7. I am in the process of fixing one up for fun driving. With proper attention the engine can last a long time. But for someone who needs a car just to hop in and take off with out attention to detail, it is just not the one! Added: IMHO a RX7 is worth keeping on the road, if you are a true car enthusiast, and will take care of it, go for it. These cars have to be driven to be enjoyed. I would trust it more for those longer drives then the short ones.

Q: Switching Insurances between two cars.?
Alright i want to get another car buut i dont think ima have enough money a month for 2 insurances. Being 17 makes the prices to high to deal with, its like having 2 insuraces already.($170) a month and thats under my moms. I was thinking about getting a summer car and a winter car. I was wondering if there is a way to switch the insurance to one car for the summer then the other car for the winter.? Also could i get some quotes on insurance for a 1989 Mazda Rx7. Thanks to all that reply.

A: Help yourself - you can easily check your quotes in internet, for example here: http://carquotes.imess.net

Ashwin Rath: thanks man! ill make sure to do those tests on it first thing.

A: Hi. I would suggest a few simple tests. 1)Take the car up to a straight road , leave the steering wheel so that its absolutely straight and step on the gas... if the car moves perfectly along a straight line, its pretty good and has not taken any serious beating... if it moves to the left or right it means the chassis is deformed... this is a BAD sign 2)No the Mazda never had any issues but i would suggest that you take check the oil in the engine and the condition of the cylinder piston rings (ask a mechanic to do this, it should cost a max of a 100 bux). If its cool.... go for it Good luck.
