Q: 2004 mazda rx8 or 2007 eclipse?
Hi!
Im a 19 year old college student looking for a car, I live on campus though so im not gonna be driving it much! but im debating between the rx8 or the eclipse.
the eclipse is a 2007, with 34k miles on it
its around $14,000
the eclipse is cute, but its really small on space, which isnt a big deal to me, but this is just REALLY small. lol
the mazda rx8 is a 2004
it has 19k miles on it
and its $9,900
the rx8 has leather heated seats, and a sunroof
i love cars, i love the rx8..id prefer it over the eclipse
but i have read terrible things about the rotary engine and maintenance.
I would make sure i kept up on the maintenance, such as changing the oil, and burning the excess fuel when turning off the car to be sure not to flood the engine. This car is also rear wheel drive, which isnt good in rain or snow, but once again, its not going to be driven too much so im not worried about that alot.
I'm mainly worried about the maintenance of the rx8, im really worried something is going to break on it and i dont plan on getting the extended warranty.
im just looking for advice, advantages and disadvantages of both of the cars and advice on which one to pick.
any advice would be really helpful, thanks!! :)
I forgot to add that the rx8 was in 2 accidents, one minor, the other one moderate, but the damages were fixed. i guess thats why its so cheap, but its in perfect condition inside and out
A: I think you'll find the RX8 is a much more entertaining car from a driving point-of-view. RWD is far better for a sports car than FWD, although it takes more driving skill to handle it.
If Mitsubishi had continued making the Eclipse as an All-Wheel-Drive car like its previous generations then it would be a good choice. But as it is it's an over-weight bloated FWD car pretending to be a sports car. Interior space for the front passengers is good, but the rear passengers better have a chiropractor on speed dial.
The RX8, OTOH, is much lighter and nimble, far more responsive, and can actually seat adults in the back.
The only reliability issues surrounding the RX8 has been, like all its predecessors, the Wankel rotary engine. And it's not usually the motors fault but that of the owner not knowing how to properly care for it. If you learn the proper care & feeding of a rotary engine then you shouldn't have to much to worry about. Learn more about the RX8 here:

Since the RX8 was in a "moderate" accident I would have a 3rd party mechanic give it a really good look-over to see how well the repairs were done. You have been quoted a excellent price. If the car is in good shape you'd have gotten a really good deal.
Q: Is a 2004 mazda rx8 good for a 19 yeat old?
Ok my parents are about to get me a 2004 mazda rx8 which is automatic. This is going to be my first car, but for about a year now i have been driving my moms infiniti FX35. I dont plan on racing or doing anything dumb i just wanted to know if it would be a good first time car. I felt with my age i would be more mature. THIS IS MY DREAM CAR.
A: The RX-8 is a great car. It has power to spare for normal driving, although with the automatic, it's no racer. You can get lots of performance out of it when needed if you learn to use the transmission lock button on the stick and manually shift the tranny.
I don't know why anyone who actually knows how to drive would say a rear wheel drive car isn't good for a novice. With the almost perfect balance of the RX 8 (it's actually called a mid engine because the engine is located behind the front axle, which improves handling.) and its sports car suspension, it is better handling than any front wheel drive car made. It's almost as good handling as the older RX7s.
The downside is that it is considered a "performance" car by insurance companies and it will cost more to insure and if routine maintenance is not done like oil changes. etc. and it has to go the the shop, there are not many places that know how to work on them. Fuel mileage will be about the same as a V-6 sedan if you keep your foot out of it.
Q: Advice needed re Mazda RX8 2004 model: Engine light on so took into local Mazda repair garage?
Report found catalyst converter broken up and oxygen sensor blocked both need replacing cost of repair is just over 1500 pounds, is this reasonable. Coil packs may also need replacing and quoted 430 pounds again is this fair? Just that a lot of money. The car is a 2004 model and apparently the warranty does not cover this????
A: A crumbling catalytic converter is not uncommon on the RX8. Rotary engines have hotter exhaust gases than piston engines which can reduce Cat life. Also a flooded engine during ownership will shorten its life. In Canada and the USA cat's have a fairly long warranty proscribed by governments...100K miles I believe. Whether this holds true for the UK is another matter. Check with Mazda on this.
I would doubt that the O2 sensors need replacing yet, but it is a possibility. I would want to see that an error code had been thrown, and continues to be thrown after the catalytic converter is replaced before I would accept that they need replacing.
And yes, 1500 pounds seem VERY high for replacing a cat and 2 O2 sensors. The labour for both is not very much.
RX8's are known for killing their ignition coils. This usually only shows up when the car is driven very hard, like being taken to a track often. If you inspect your coils you can see if they need replacing. The plastic housings will show melting damage. If they do need replacing and you do take your car to the track I'd look around the 'net for heat sinks that can be mounted underneath the packs. It will greatly improve their lifespan.
And again, 430 pounds seem VERY high for replacement. Again, there is very little labour in replacing them. They can be expensive but should not be that much.
Go online and check the parts pricing. They seem high to me but in the UK that may just be what the prices are. But I think they're trying to take advantage of you.

RX8
A: Evo 8 by far!! There's no way to compare them because the Evo 8 will blast the RX8 away every time.
It's an AWD turbo sedan. Perfect for people hauling and trips to the local track.
The RX8 is rotary, heavy, and slow.
Q: i want to sell mazda rx8 but i havent finish to pay it off?
hi i have 2 questions i want to sell my 2004 mazda rx8 53k miles on it and is good condition i paid 15k for it 6 months ago i went to kkd.com i think is the website and they value my car for around 9k if i trade it bu here is my question if i want to get another car lieke a 2005 gt mustang and is around 17k$ and the dealer just paying me 9k$ for my car do i have to pay them the 8k + the 5k that i still owning from my car? so will be 13k$
or:
can i just sell the car to the dealer even if i havent fisnish paying the car? and then pay by month the rest of the value?
A: Since u just brought your car you have negative equity in it. From taxes, fees, etc. So you will most likely be upside down in your trade, however, most dealers let u carry the negative equity to your new purchase. I dont see u getting in a 2005 gt mustang with 6k negative equity carrying over. You need to get a new car with a rebate maybe a 2008 mustang to eat away the negative equity.
Q: Why does my Rx8 eat so much gass?
Alright, i have a 2004 mazda rx8, and yes i know they arent teh best fuel savers but it says 18/24...well i have a question, when i fill my gas tank all the way full...i drive 99miles a day round trip, and it eats from above the F to almost the halfway point. but once it hits the halfway point it eats the gas very slowly...what is up with it? shouldn't it be consistant?
A: Actually you will notice that the first quarter tank and the last quarter go very quickly, but the middle 2 quarters go down slower.
This is because the gas tank of the Rx8 is a "saddle-tank". It straddles the drive shaft and exhaust and is basically in two sections.
The main fuel pump, along with the level float is in one side. The other side of the tank has a small pump that pumps its gas over to the first side. So after the first quarter or so is gone from the main side, the second side starts pumping its gas over. So it seems that the middle portion of the tanks drains slower because it's being augmented from the second side of the saddle until it's empty.
Q: Will Mazda Rx8 rims fit Mazda 3
I heard that the Rx8 rims will fit the 3 but will the original mazda 3 (2004 i model) tires fit on the Rx8 rims.
Mazda 3 has P205/55R16
Rx8 has 16x7.5 & 5x114.3 bolt pattern
A: The tires will not fit.
You would need to get new tires.
But the RX-8 wheels definitely fit. I have seen Mazda 3's with those wheels.
Q: Mazda RX8 Radio Question- Please Help?
Is hooking up a radio for a Maxda RX8 (2004) any different than a normal hookup? I mean, is it different or is there something special you will have to do to make it work?
A: The easiest solution is to buy the correct wiring harness for the radio you are installing into your RX8
Q: How much tax if I buy a car through ebay?
Hi
I am planing to buy a car through a third party on ebay. The car is a 2004 mazda RX8 ($14000) it is in Utah and I am in CA how much would I pay taxes for this car during registration at DMV?
Thank you
A: Contact your local DMV for specific fee information. They will charge you whatever sales/excise tax and registration fees applicable in your area. It makes no difference that the car being bought is from Utah.
Q: At what rpm should I keep my manual transmission car to maximize gas milage?
Just wondering what rpm I should shift up to maximize gas milage.
I have herd as low as 3500 and as high as redline.
It is a 2004 Mazda rx8
A: i coast in 4th gear everywhere i run about 1400 rpm going 40 mph
and run 2200 going 65 on the freeway. 3500 is Way to high i never even bring my engine over 3000
Q: Mazda RX-8 Key upgrade?
I just got bought a 2004 Mazda rx8 and the only little thing bothering me is my Key-less Remote. Is there anywhere or anyway that i can get a different Key-less Remote and get it working with my car?
ThanX
Nothing is technically wrong with the remote
i just really don't like the appearance
where can i at least change the remote into a different style?
A: I remember this question on rx8club.com.
From what I know, there is a way to do that. the keystyles for rx8 are
04- the ugly one you have
05- swichblade i think
06-08- keyless start keys
I know that they all work with the same reciever and transmitter, all you have to do is buy the key from mazda. (costs alot of money as you know).
I found it its here http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=43873
Also you can get uncut keys from ebay for 40 bux.
Q: what do i need to do to make my car turbo compatible?
is it possible to make my 2004 mazda rx8 a/t able to safely handle a turbo? or supercharger?
A: you can just buy a turbo kit that fits your car specifically. there are alot of aftermarket companies that make a turbo kit for your car. Automatic transmission does not mean that a Turbo can not be used. you car can probably handle a turbo safely with a kit. when you get a kit, you will get everything you need to make it safe and reliable. look at some site and you might find a good kit for decent price. if you spending the money get it professionally installed it will last you ever longer that way
Q: how much will it cost to get my car imported to USA?
I live in scotland, uk
my car is a 2004 mazda rx8
i wanna get it imported to california usa
roughly how much
A: It would actually be a better deal to buy the same car here, as opposed to shipping it and then converting it over to US emission specs. But I know how attached you are and you're going to do it anyway. Good luck. If you don't mind it being driven to California, I'd be first in line to volunteer.
